Archival Overview
Trailblazing modernist poet whose revolutionary 1956 collection 'Tämä matka' (This Journey) sparked the breakthrough of post-war Finnish free-verse modernism, fusing Bach's polyphony with Eastern philosophy.
Biographical Record
Eeva-Liisa Manner was born in Helsinki on December 5, 1921, and raised in Vyborg (Viipuri), whose wartime loss deeply marked her imagination. In 1956, her poetry collection Tämä matka transformed Finnish literature: abandoning traditional meter for luminous, associative, musical free verse influenced by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Living between Tampere and Andalusia, Spain, Manner published acclaimed plays, essays, and translated Shakespeare, Hesse, and Lewis Carroll. Her profound meditations on animal rights, nature, and the mystery of consciousness earned her the Aleksis Kivi Prize and State Literature Award.
