Biographical Record
Edgar Austin Mittelholzer was a foundational figure in Caribbean literature, recognized as the first English-speaking West Indian novelist to achieve widespread commercial publication and European acclaim.
Born in New Amsterdam, British Guiana, Mittelholzer moved to London in 1948, publishing over twenty books, notably the epic 'Kaywana' historical trilogy chronicling four centuries of Guyanese colonial plantation society.
His psychological ghost stories and vivid social satires, such as 'A Morning at the Office' and 'Corentyne Thunder', paved the way for subsequent generations of Caribbean authors.
