Biographical Record
Countess Maria Theodora Paulina 'Dora' Pejačević was born on September 10, 1885, into a noble aristocratic family with vast estates in Našice, Slavonia. Educated in music in Zagreb, Dresden, and Munich, she rejected aristocratic frivolousness to dedicate her life entirely to serious compositional mastery.
Pejačević produced an extraordinary body of 58 compositions: exquisite lieder, chamber works, a Piano Concerto, and her monumental Symphony in F-sharp minor (Op. 41). Her music, celebrated by Karl Kraus and Rainer Maria Rilke, was performed by top orchestras in Vienna, Dresden, and Budapest.
