Archival Overview

National poet of Greece who composed the 'Hymn to Liberty', the national anthem of Greece and Cyprus.

Biographical Record

Count Dionysios Solomos was the foremost poet of the Ionian School and the national poet of Greece, celebrated for elevating the demotic (vernacular) Greek language into sublime high literature.

Born in Zakynthos and educated in Italy, Solomos was inspired by the 1821 Revolution to compose the monumental 158-stanza poem 'Hymn to Liberty' in 1823, set to music by Nikolaos Mantzaros to become the national anthem.

His unfinished epic 'The Free Besieged' (Eleftheroi Poliorkimenoi), commemorating the heroic fall of Missolonghi, is universally regarded as a supreme masterpiece of Greek poetry.
