Biographical Record
Antchouwé Kowe Rapontchombo, celebrated across the Atlantic world as King Denis, was born circa 1780. Possessing commanding intellectual charisma and fluency in French, English, Spanish, and Portuguese, Denis was the undisputed doyen of coastal diplomacy.
In 1839, Denis signed the initial commercial cooperation treaty with France that led to the founding of Libreville in 1849. He famously refused to allow human trafficking, protected shipwrecked sailors of all nations, and was awarded the French Legion of Honor and gifts from Queen Victoria, ruling peacefully until his death at age ninety-six.
