Biographical Record
Pierre Eustache Daniel Fignolé was a charismatic educator, labor champion, and orator whose popularity among the working-class masses of Port-au-Prince was unprecedented.
Founding the Mouvement Ouvrier Paysan (MOP), the largest political and labor movement in Haitian history, Fignolé could summon hundreds of thousands of dockworkers and slum dwellers into the streets (known as 'le rouleau compresseur').
Appointed provisional President of Haiti in May 1957 amidst political crisis, he governed for only nineteen days before being overthrown in a military coup orchestrated by General Antonio Kébreau and forced into nineteen years of exile.
