Biographical Record
Dagon Taya was born on May 10, 1919, in Kyaiklat. As editor of the Rangoon University Students' Union magazine Oway, he worked alongside Aung San and U Nu. In 1946, he published his famous essay on Aung San, Aung San Thu-do-aung-san ('Aung San the Untamed'), capturing the leader's human frailties and raw genius.
Taya founded the Sar-Thit literary movement, arguing that art must serve peace, human rights, and the working people rather than military propaganda. Imprisoned for four years under Ne Win's military dictatorship, he remained an unbending voice for democratic reconciliation and aesthetic freedom until his passing in 2013 at age ninety-four.
