Archival Overview

Professional footballer and musical icon who created the infectious Kompa Mamba style with Trio Select.

Biographical Record

Coupé Cloué (born Jean Gesner Henri) was a beloved Haitian singer, guitarist, and bandleader whose rhythmic humor and storytelling defined popular Caribbean dance music for four decades.

Originally a star defender for the Aigle Noir football club (earning the nickname 'Coupé Cloué' for his sweeping tackles), he transitioned to music, founding Trio Select in 1957, which evolved into Ensemble Select.

His laid-back, infectious 'Kompa Mamba' groove and witty, double-entendre Creole lyrics captivated fans across Haiti, the French Antilles, and West Africa, where he was crowned 'King of Kompa'.
