"Our Canadian winter is not dead white; it is saturated with violet, amber, and the deepest azure reflections."

Archival Overview

Celebrated Quebec painter and printmaker whose vibrant, jewel-like canvases captured the light, snow, and village life of Charlevoix.

Biographical Record

Clarence Alphonse Gagnon was an internationally admired French-Canadian painter and etcher. After training at the Monument National in Montreal and the Académie Julian in Paris, Gagnon made the village of Baie-Saint-Paul in Charlevoix his spiritual artistic home, capturing the undulating snowdrifts, timber cottages, and horse-drawn sleighs of traditional Quebec winter life.

His luminous palette and rejection of somber Academic shadows immortalized rural French Canada. Gagnon is especially renowned for creating fifty-four gouache illustrations for Louis Hémon's classic novel Maria Chapdelaine, hailed as masterpieces of Canadian book illustration.
