Archival Overview
Flamboyant, longest-reigning monarch in Danish history (60 years) known as 'The Builder King', who founded Christiania (Oslo) and erected Copenhagen's most iconic monuments: Rosenborg, Rundetårn, and Børsen.
Biographical Record
Christian IV was born on April 12, 1577, succeeding to the Danish and Norwegian thrones at age eleven in 1588. Blessed with boundless physical energy, artistic vision, and naval passion, Christian transformed his kingdom's architectural landscape.
He built the Dutch Renaissance marvel Rosenborg Castle, the Round Tower (Rundetårn) astronomical observatory, the Stock Exchange (Børsen) with its dragon-tail spire, and founded modern cities including Christiania (now Oslo), Kristiansand, and Glückstadt. Leading his fleet in battle into his late sixties, losing an eye at Kolberger Heide, he remains Denmark's most colorful historic king.
