Archival Overview
Heroic nationalist leader of the Cacos rebellion against the United States occupation of Haiti, National Hero of Haiti.
Biographical Record
Charlemagne Masséna Péralte was a Haitian military officer and nationalist revolutionary leader who led armed resistance against the United States military occupation of Haiti (1915–1934).
Refusing to submit to the brutal corvée forced labor system imposed by US Marines, Péralte organized over 5,000 Cacos guerrillas across the northern mountains, declaring an autonomous provisional government and laying siege to Port-au-Prince.
Betrayed by an undercover operative in October 1919, he was shot dead in his mountain camp; US forces photographed his body tied to a door, creating an iconic image resembling the Crucifixion that transformed him into an immortal national martyr.
