Biographical Record
Kallfülikan, known as Caupolicán, was born in Pilmaiquén. According to Mapuche tradition immortalized in Alonso de Ercilla's Renaissance epic La Araucana, Caupolicán won election as supreme Toqui by carrying a massive tree trunk upon his shoulders for two days and nights without faltering.
Co-commanding the Mapuche confederation alongside Lautaro, Caupolicán defeated Spanish forces at Fort Tucapel and laid siege to imperial garrisons across southern Chile. Captured in 1558 through betrayal at Antihuala, he faced execution by impalement with serene disdain, kicking the executioner from the scaffold before dying as an immortal symbol of Indigenous resilience.
