"With every stitch, we bind the blue and the red into an unbroken covenant of liberty."

Archival Overview

Haitian revolutionary heroine and seamstress who created the first Haitian national flag at the Congress of Arcahaie in 1803.

Biographical Record

Catherine Flon was a courageous Haitian patriot and goddaughter of Jean-Jacques Dessalines who played an iconic symbolic role in the birth of the Haitian nation.

On May 18, 1803, during the historic Congress of Arcahaie, Dessalines ripped the white central band from the French tricolor to signify the expulsion of the French colonizers. Catherine Flon gathered the remaining blue and red bands, sewing them together with needle and thread to create the first national flag of free Haiti.

Her heroic act is commemorated on Haitian currency and celebrated every May 18 as Haitian Flag and University Day.
