Pioneering Guatemalan modernist painter and muralist who synthesized Mayan ancestral iconography with European geometric abstraction.
Biographical Record
Carlos Mérida was one of the earliest and most innovative modern artists in Latin America, celebrated for fusing pre-Columbian Mayan motifs with European cubism and surrealism.
Studying in Paris alongside Modigliani and Diego Rivera, Mérida assisted Rivera with the seminal Anfiteatro Bolívar murals before developing his distinctive geometric and biomorphic abstract style.
His monumental integrated murals in Guatemala City, including those at the Banco de Guatemala and the Municipal Palace, redefined modernist architectural art across the Americas.
