Archival Overview
Bohemian poet, journalist, and co-founder of the seminal Indigenist review 'La Revue Indigène'.
Biographical Record
Carl Brouard was one of Haiti's most radical bohemian poets and intellectuals, celebrated for his raw, unvarnished verse honoring the urban working poor and Vodou rituals.
In 1927, Brouard co-founded 'La Revue Indigène' alongside Jacques Roumain and Émile Roumer, sparking the cultural renaissance that rejected Western assimilation and embraced Haitian popular traditions.
Abandoning bourgeois comforts to live among the impoverished dockworkers and drum ceremonies of Port-au-Prince's slums, his collection 'Ecrit sur du ruban rose' remains a cornerstone of Haitian modernism.
