Biographical Record
Carl Heinrich Bloch was born in Copenhagen on May 23, 1834. Studying under Wilhelm Marstrand at the Royal Danish Academy of Art, Bloch traveled to Rome on a state grant, where his dramatic canvas Prometheus Unbound (1864) established his continental reputation.
Commissioned by brewer J.C. Jacobsen to paint the King's Oratory in the restored Frederiksborg Castle, Bloch spent fourteen years producing twenty-three magnificent biblical scenes, including The Resurrection and Christ Healing the Sick at Bethesda. His works remain among the most reproduced religious paintings in modern Christian history.
