Archival Overview
Universally cherished Bosnian storyteller and satirist whose tender humor and masterpieces ('Bašta sljezove boje', 'Doživljaji Nikoletine Bursaća') brought warmth to generations of readers.
Biographical Record
Branko Ćopić was born on January 1, 1915, in Hašani near Grmeč mountain. Graduating in philosophy from the University of Belgrade, Ćopić joined the Partisans in 1941, becoming the beloved wartime bard and chronicler of ordinary peasant combatants (such as Nikoletina Bursać).
With unmatched lyrical warmth and gentle Balkan humor, Ćopić authored hundreds of stories and novels, including Prolom, Orlovi rano lete, and his lyrical nostalgic masterpiece Bašta sljezove boje (The Mallow-Colored Garden). In 1950, his satirical Heresy Story criticized communist party elites, causing official censure. Tragically haunted by fears of renewed Balkan ethnic conflict, he took his life in 1984.
