Archival Overview
Cacos guerrilla supreme commander who succeeded Charlemagne Péralte in leading resistance against the United States occupation.
Biographical Record
Benoît Batraville was a fierce Haitian patriot and military leader who assumed command of the Cacos resistance following the assassination of Charlemagne Péralte in late 1919.
Operating in the rugged Central Plateau, Batraville reorganized guerrilla units, ambushed American military patrols, and mounted a daring assault on Port-au-Prince in January 1920.
He fought courageously until being surrounded and killed by US Marine forces near Lascahobas in May 1920, honored alongside Péralte as a supreme martyr of Haitian national anti-imperialism.
