Archival Overview
Legendary patriot commander known as 'Abba Koster' who mobilized a guerrilla army of 40,000 fighters in the gorges of Gojjam, repeatedly annihilating elite Italian fascist divisions for five years.
Biographical Record
Belay Zeleke was born in Bichena, Gojjam, in 1912. When Mussolini's armies invaded in 1935, the 23-year-old Belay swore never to surrender his ancestral soil, establishing his stronghold on Mount Somma in the Abbay (Blue Nile) gorge.
Over five brutal years, Belay's patriot guerrilla forces (Arbegnoch) inflicted staggering defeats on Italian colonial columns at Debre Marqos and the Blue Nile crossings. When Emperor Haile Selassie returned from exile in 1941, he saluted Belay as one of Ethiopia's greatest military saviors. Tragic postwar political rivalries led to his execution in 1945, his name remaining synonymous with rural valor.
