Archival Overview
Distinguished physician, public health pioneer, and WHO director who won 84% of the vote in the 1968 Dahomey presidential election before military leaders annulled the democratic result.
Biographical Record
Basile Adjou Moumouni was born on October 5, 1922, in Cotonou. After completing medical studies in Dakar and Paris, he specialized in public health and epidemiology, serving as a senior medical director for the World Health Organization (WHO) across Africa.
In May 1968, running as an independent civilian reformer against entrenched political factions, Dr. Adjou Moumouni won a landslide 84% of the vote in the presidential elections. However, the ruling military junta of Colonel Alphonse Alley unconstitutionally annulled the results. Refusing to resort to violence, Moumouni returned to WHO international service, dedicating his life to eradicating tropical diseases.
