Biographical Record
Bartolomé Masó was born in Bayamo on December 21, 1830. A wealthy planter in Manzanillo, Masó gave his wealth and youth to the 1868 revolution, rising to brigadier general and suffering years of imprisonment in Chafarinas and Ceuta.
In 1895, Masó was among the first commanders to take up arms at Bayate on February 24. Elected Vice-President and later President of the Republic in Arms in 1897, Masó fiercely rejected the Platt Amendment and foreign interference, standing as an incorruptible pillar of national dignity.
