"There is no medicine for the bite of the white snake; we must rise and defend our fathers' fields."

Archival Overview

Fearless Dejazmach of Akkele Guzay who led the historic 1894 armed rebellion against Italian colonial expropriation of Eritrean farmland, famously warning: 'There is no medicine for the bite of the white snake.'

Biographical Record

Bahta Hagos was born circa 1845 in Segheneyti. A skilled warrior and diplomat, Bahta initially allied with Italian forces to secure peace for his province against Tigrayan warlords, receiving the title of Dejazmach.

However, when the Italian colonial government began confiscating vast fertile peasant agricultural lands to settle Italian colonists, Bahta was outraged. In December 1894, he took the Italian resident prisoner and launched an armed uprising, famously declaring: 'There is no medicine for the bite of the white snake.' He fell heroically in combat at the Battle of Halai on December 19, 1894.
