Archival Overview
Father of modern Croatian literature whose beloved historical novels 'Zlatarovo zlato' and 'Seljačka buna' created a unified reading public and gave literary voice to Zagreb's history.
Biographical Record
August Šenoa was born in Zagreb on November 14, 1838. Combining law studies in Prague and Vienna with journalism, Šenoa revitalized Croatian letters, publishing Zlatarovo zlato (The Goldsmith's Gold) in 1871—the very first modern Croatian novel.
As artistic director of the Croatian National Theatre and editor of Vijenac, he fostered an entire generation of writers. Following the devastating 1880 Zagreb earthquake, Šenoa served tirelessly as City Senator assessing damage and sheltering homeless families; the severe winter cold caused fatal pneumonia, ending his life at forty-three.
