Archival Overview
Last sovereign Emperor (Sapa Inca) of Tawantinsuyu who triumphed in the Inca civil war, captured by Francisco Pizarro at Cajamarca in 1532, offering a room filled once with gold and twice with silver for his ransom.
Biographical Record
Ataw Wallpa was born circa 1502, the son of Inca Emperor Huayna Capac and a noble Quitonian princess. Following his father's sudden death from smallpox, Atahualpa governed the northern kingdom centered at Quito, defeating his half-brother Huáscar in the bitter Inca civil war.
On November 16, 1532, at the thermal baths of Cajamarca, Atahualpa was ambushed by Francisco Pizarro's Spanish conquistadors. Captured, he famously filled the Ransom Room (Cuarto del Rescate) with gold and silver. Despite delivering the treasure, Pizarro executed him by garrote on July 26, 1533. His loyal general Rumiñahui took his royal body back to the northern kingdom.
