Archival Overview
Brilliant, tragic pioneer of the 'Generación Decapitada' whose lyrical collection 'La flauta de ónix' and musical sonnets introduced French Parnassian decadence to Ecuador before his suicide at age twenty.
Biographical Record
Arturo Borja Pérez was born in Quito on September 15, 1892, a direct descendant of the Spanish Borgia dynasty. Sent to Paris in 1907 to recover from an eye ailment, Borja immersed himself in Mallarmé, Rimbaud, and Samain, returning to Quito as the charismatic herald of musical symbolism.
Forming a close literary circle with Ernesto Noboa y Caamaño and Humberto Fierro, Borja composed exquisitely refined verses. Shortly after his marriage to Carmen Rosa Sánchez, Borja took a fatal overdose of morphine on November 13, 1912, dying at only twenty years of age.
