Biographical Record
Arturo Ambrogi Acosta was born in San Salvador on October 19, 1874, the son of an Italian immigrant and a Salvadoran mother. Reading French symbolists and befriending Rubén Darío in his youth, Ambrogi brought cosmopolitan modernist sophistication to Salvadoran literature.
Traveling extensively through the Far East, Europe, and South America as a consul, he mastered the impressionist travel chronicle. His foundational works El libro del trópico and El jetón introduced psychological realism and atmospheric prose, documenting rural traditions and establishing the modern Salvadoran short story.
