Biographical Record
Arthur Schnitzler was born on May 15, 1862, in Vienna, the son of a renowned Jewish laryngologist. Qualifying as a medical doctor and practicing medicine, Schnitzler brought unprecedented clinical insight into his literary examination of human eroticism, subconscious hypocrisy, and fin-de-siècle Viennese anxiety.
In 1900, his novella Lieutenant Gustl introduced the stream-of-consciousness interior monologue into German literature. His controversial play Reigen (La Ronde, 1897) ignited theatrical riots and censorship bans across Europe for its candid depiction of sexual encounters across social classes. His 1926 masterpiece Traumnovelle (Dream Story) famously inspired Stanley Kubrick's film Eyes Wide Shut.
