Archival Overview
Inuit seal hunter, artist, and oral historian whose watercolors and woodcuts preserved Greenlandic folklore and traditional culture.
Biographical Record
Aron of Kangeq was a Greenlandic Inuit seal hunter who, after becoming bedridden with tuberculosis, emerged as Greenland's foundational visual artist and oral historian.
Encouraged by Danish administrator Hinrich Rink, Aron created over 300 vibrant watercolor paintings and meticulous woodcut prints illustrating traditional Inuit oral tales, spiritual shamanic myths, and historical clashes with Norse settlers.
His vivid, psychologically charged artworks are preserved in the Greenland National Museum, standing as the earliest and most vital indigenous artistic record of pre-modern Greenland.
