Archival Overview
Founding father and first President of independent Cape Verde (1975–1991) who co-founded the PAIGC with Amílcar Cabral and peacefully ushered in multiparty democracy in 1991.
Biographical Record
Aristides Maria Pereira was born on November 17, 1923, on Boa Vista island. Working as a radiotelegraph technician in Bissau, Pereira co-founded the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) in 1956 alongside Amílcar Cabral, serving as Secretary-General following Cabral's assassination in 1973.
On July 5, 1975, Pereira was inaugurated as the first President of the independent Republic of Cape Verde. Stewarding the drought-stricken archipelago through remarkable agrarian development, diplomacy of non-alignment, and education, he voluntarily organized free multiparty democratic elections in 1991, gracefully accepting defeat and setting a continental model for peaceful democratic transition. Rabil International Airport was renamed Aristides Pereira International Airport in his honor.
