Archival Overview
Brilliant and acerbic leader of the Croatian Modernist movement whose travelogues, crystalline sonnets like 'Utjeha kose', and incisive essays defined European artistic standards for modern Croatia.
Biographical Record
Antun Gustav Matoš was born in Tovarnik in Syrmia on June 13, 1873. Deserting the Austro-Hungarian military in 1894, Matoš endured fourteen years of bohemian exile across Geneva, Florence, and Paris, working as a café cellist and Parisian correspondent.
Amnestied in 1908, he returned to Zagreb, becoming the undisputed lightning rod of the Croatian literary modern. His sonnets ('Jesenje veče', '1909') and fantastical tales like 'Cvijet sa raskršća' introduced French symbolism and impressionism into Croatian prose. He passed away at the Sisters of Charity Hospital in 1914.
