Archival Overview

Immortal military genius known as 'The Bronze Titan' (El Titán de Bronce), whose heroic 1878 Protest of Baraguá refused peace without freedom and who led the legendary westward cavalry invasion of Cuba.

Biographical Record

Antonio Maceo Grajales was born on June 14, 1845, in Santiago de Cuba to an Afro-Cuban family committed to freedom. Enlisting as a private in 1868, his tactical brilliance and physical fearlessness carried him to Lieutenant General.

When other rebel chiefs signed the Pact of Zanjón in 1878 accepting peace without abolition of slavery, Maceo issued the immortal Protest of Baraguá, vowing to fight on. In the 1895 War, he and Máximo Gómez executed the Westward Invasion, marching 1,000 miles across Cuba against superior Spanish numbers before his martyrdom in combat at Punta Brava in 1896.
