Biographical Record
Anton Hansen was born on January 30, 1878, on a remote bog farm in Albu. Adopting the pen name A.H. Tammsaare from his birthplace, he studied law at the University of Tartu before tuberculosis forced him into years of solitary convalescence in the forests.
Between 1926 and 1933, he published his monumental five-volume masterpiece Tõde ja õigus (Truth and Justice), opening with the immortal struggle of farmer Andres against the harsh swamp earth: 'Work hard and struggle, then love will come.' His biting satirical novel The Misadventures of the New Satan (Põrgupõhja uus Vanapagan, 1939) cemented his status as Estonia's supreme novelist.
