Archival Overview
Revered as 'Otac Domovine' (Father of the Homeland), uncompromising political philosopher who founded the Croatian Party of Rights and championed the complete sovereignty of the Croatian nation.
Biographical Record
Ante Starčević was born in Žitnik near Gospić on May 23, 1823. Earning a doctorate in philosophy at Pest, Starčević entered politics fiercely opposing both Habsburg centralization and Hungarian hegemony.
Co-founding the Party of Rights (Stranka prava) in 1861 with Eugen Kvaternik, Starčević formulated the doctrine of Croatian state right—arguing that Croatian statehood had never been legally extinguished and must be restored as an independent, democratic republic of free citizens. His austere moral authority shaped modern Croatian political thought.
