Archival Overview

Major 20th-century Greek lyrical poet and playwright who revived the Delphic Festivals to promote universal human brotherhood.

Biographical Record

Angelos Sikelianos was a visionary Greek lyric poet whose grand philosophical verse synthesized classical Greek humanism with universal mysticism.

Together with his American wife Eva Palmer, Sikelianos revived the ancient Delphic Idea, organizing the international Delphic Festivals in 1927 and 1930 at Delphi to foster world peace through art and theatrical drama.

During the Axis occupation of Greece, his thunderous recitation at Kostis Palamas' funeral ignited public defiance against the Nazi authorities, solidifying his role as a spiritual voice of national resistance.
