Archival Overview
World-renowned geophysicist and meteorologist who discovered the boundary between the Earth's crust and mantle—named in his honor the Mohorovičić Discontinuity (Moho)—a pillar of modern geophysics.
Biographical Record
Andrija Mohorovičić was born on January 23, 1857, in Volosko. Studying mathematics and physics at the University of Prague under Ernst Mach, Mohorovičić returned to Croatia, teaching navigation at Bakar before directing the Zagreb Meteorological Observatory.
Analyzing seismograms from the Pokuplje earthquake of October 8, 1909, Mohorovičić discovered that seismic waves reflect and bend at a distinct subsurface boundary. He proved the existence of the boundary dividing the Earth's rigid crust from the denser mantle—now universally termed the 'Moho'. Both a lunar crater and an asteroid bear his name.
