Archival Overview

Admiral of the Greek revolutionary fleet from Hydra whose naval victories secured Greek coastal independence.

Biographical Record

Andreas Vokos Miaoulis was a merchant captain from Hydra who served as commander-in-chief of the Greek insurgent fleet during the War of Independence.

Utilizing small, nimble Greek brigs and deadly fireships (burlota) commanded by captains like Konstantinos Kanaris, Miaoulis repeatedly outmaneuvered and defeated superior Ottoman and Egyptian fleets at Patras, Spetses, and Samos.

His naval leadership kept vital supply lines open to Greek fighters on the mainland, cementing Hydra's maritime supremacy and ensuring Greece's maritime sovereignty.
