Archival Overview
Master painter and Vodou priest (Houngan) who dedicated his entire artistic oeuvre to portraying the Vodou pantheon.
Biographical Record
André Pierre was an internationally revered artist and practicing Houngan from Croix-des-Missions who is considered the supreme spiritual painter of Haitian Vodou.
Originally decorating sacred gourds and temple altars (hounfòs), Pierre was encouraged by Maya Deren to paint on canvas, producing mesmerizing, richly colored portraits of the spirits emerging from watery realms and sacred trees.
Rejecting commercialism, Pierre viewed his painting strictly as an act of religious worship and instruction, stating that his brush was guided directly by the spirits.
