"If an artist does not sing in the language of his mothers, he leaves his cultural soul in exile."

Archival Overview

Foundational musician celebrated as 'Le Dopé National' who pioneered modern urban Ivorian popular music, blending indigenous Bété folk songs with guitar orchestration and founding the Ivoiro Star orchestra.

Biographical Record

Amédée Pierre Philippe was born on March 30, 1937, in Tabou. Initially studying nursing, his extraordinary vocal talent and love for indigenous melody led him to music, forming the seminal orchestra 'Ivoiro Star' in 1958.

Breaking away from the total dominance of imported Cuban and Congolese music on Abidjan radio, Amédée Pierre insisted on composing and singing in indigenous languages, notably Bété. His classic hits 'Mouna' and 'Sikeli' earned him the title 'Le Dopé' (the singing bird), and he championed the founding of BURIDA, the national copyright society.
