Amandus Heinrich Adamson was born on November 12, 1855, near Paldiski, the son of a sea captain. Graduating from the Saint Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts, Adamson studied in Paris, winning international medals for his exquisite wood and marble sculptures.

In 1902, he unveiled his masterpiece in Kadriorg: the Russalka Memorial, commemorating the 1893 shipwreck of the coastal defense ship Russalka with a magnificent 16-meter granite column crowned by a bronze angel.
