Biographical Record
Aman Mikael Andom was born in Tsazega in 1924. A brilliant, towering graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, General Aman gained immense national popularity as commander of the Third Division in Harar during the 1964 border conflict with Somalia, nicknamed 'The Desert Lion'.
Following the overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie in September 1974, Aman was appointed Head of State and Chairman of the Derg. Advocating peaceful reconciliation in Eritrea and refusing to sign execution warrants for former imperial ministers, Aman was surrounded by Mengistu's tanks on November 23, 1974, fighting to his last bullet.
