Archival Overview
Leading expressionist painter and co-founder of the avant-garde November Group (Marraskuun ryhmä) whose muted earthy tones and geometric cubist structures depicted deep spiritual contemplation and rural Finnish life.
Biographical Record
Frans Alvar Cawén was born on June 8, 1886, in Korpilahti. Studying at the Finnish Art Society Drawing School in Helsinki and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, Cawén absorbed the radical innovations of Cézanne and cubism.
Returning to Finland, Cawén co-founded the November Group in 1916 alongside Tyko Sallinen. Rejecting salon prettiness, Cawén painted stark, melancholic, gray-brown landscapes of central Finland, blind musicians, and spiritual compositions, such as his celebrated altarpiece for Kuusankoski Church, imbuing ordinary people with quiet monumentality.
