Archival Overview

World-renowned titan of Art Nouveau whose posters for Sarah Bernhardt defined Parisian Belle Époque visual style, and who dedicated eighteen years to his monumental twenty-canvas masterpiece 'The Slav Epic'.

Biographical Record

Alfons Maria Mucha was born in Ivančice on July 24, 1860. In Paris on Christmas Eve 1894, he created a lithographed poster for actress Sarah Bernhardt in Gismonda; its sinuous pastel elegance caused an overnight sensation, inaugurating 'Le Style Mucha'.

Rejecting mere commercial fame, Mucha returned home to paint The Slav Epic (Slovanská epopej)—twenty monumental canvases measuring up to six by eight meters depicting Slavic history, which he gifted to Prague. Interrogated by the Gestapo following the 1939 Nazi occupation, he contracted fatal pneumonia weeks later.
