Last Almamy of the Fouta Djallon confederacy who died fighting French colonial forces at the Battle of Porédaka.
Biographical Record
Almamy Bocar Biro Barry was the supreme spiritual and political ruler of the Fouta Djallon Islamic confederacy who led fierce armed resistance against French imperial annexation in the late 19th century.
Refusing French demands to accept a colonial protectorate and submit traditional Fulani institutions to foreign rule, Bocar Biro mobilized thousands of warriors to defend the sovereignty of the plateau realm.
On November 13, 1896, French colonial artillery crushed his forces at the Battle of Porédaka, where Bocar Biro fell in battle, remembered in Guinean history as a courageous royal martyr of anti-colonial resistance.
