Biographical Record
Edgardo Alfredo Espino was born on January 8, 1900, in Ahuachapán into an artistic family. Earning a law doctorate from the University of El Salvador, Espino was tormented by bohemian melancholy and deep romantic crises.
Roaming the hills around San Salvador and Lake Ilopango, he penned crystal-clear, intensely musical sonnets celebrating the beauty of the countryside: 'Un rancho y un lucero', 'El nido', and 'Cañal en flor'. Ending his fragile life at age twenty-eight, his collection Jícaras tristes was published in 1932 with drawings by Salarrué, becoming a sacred text in every Salvadoran home.
