Biographical Record
Prince Alexander of Georgia (Alexander Batonishvili) was a royal prince of the Bagrationi dynasty and the son of King Erekle II who led persistent resistance against the Russian annexation of Georgia.
Refusing to submit to the Tsarist abolition of the Georgian monarchy in 1801, Alexander formed alliances with Dagestani mountaineers and Persian forces, leading major insurrections in Kakheti in 1812 and across the South Caucasus.
He spent over four decades in unrelenting armed opposition, remembered in Georgian historiography as an uncompromising defender of royal independence.
