Archival Overview
Celebrated Georgian novelist who depicted the heroic and tragic struggles of Caucasian mountain communities against colonial oppression.
Biographical Record
Alexander Kazbegi was an aristocratic Georgian writer from Stepantsminda who abandoned his noble privileges to live as a humble shepherd in the high Caucasus mountains to understand the common people.
His immersion in mountain folklore inspired classic novels such as 'The Patricide' (Elgudja) and 'Khevisberi Gocha', depicting the struggle for personal liberty and the moral code of mountain honor against corrupt Tsarist officialdom.
His fictional hero Koba, an outlaw defending the downtrodden, became a legendary cultural archetype across the Caucasus region.
