Philosopher, moral essayist, and social reformer whose humanitarian doctrine 'El Mínimo Vital' argued that every citizen is entitled to guaranteed food, shelter, education, and healthcare as a basic human right.
Biographical Record
Vicente Alberto Masferrer was born on July 24, 1868, in Alegría, Usulután. A self-taught polymath and teacher, Masferrer served as a diplomat across Central America and Europe, developing a passionate social philosophy grounded in Christian ethics and theosophy.
His visionary 1929 essay El Mínimo Vital proposed a non-violent social contract guaranteeing every citizen the minimum material conditions for dignity: clean water, decent work, bread, and schools. Heartbroken by the savage 1932 peasant massacre under General Maximiliano Hernández Martínez, Masferrer suffered a fatal stroke in September 1932.
