Biographical Record
Alaíde Foppa de Solórzano was a groundbreaking feminist theorist, poet, and university professor who helped inaugurate the modern feminist movement in Latin America.
Exiled to Mexico following the overthrow of the Guatemalan democratic government, Foppa held the first chair in the Sociology of Women at UNAM and founded the feminist journal 'Fem' in 1976.
While visiting her mother in Guatemala City in December 1980, she was forcibly abducted by government death squads and disappeared, remembered internationally as a martyr of free expression and women's rights.
