Along with his close collaborator Ilia Chavchavadze, Tsereteli championed the modernization of Georgian literary language and fought against Tsarist Russification policies through satirical poetry, plays, and memoirs.

His poem 'Suliko' was set to music and became one of the most famous and widely performed folk melodies in the Caucasus and Eastern Europe.
