Founding father of modern Afghanistan who united the Pashtun tribes in 1747, established the Durrani Empire stretching from Iran to Delhi, and triumphed at the Third Battle of Panipat.
Biographical Record
Ahmad Shah Durrani, revered by Afghans as Ahmad Shah Baba (Father of the Nation), was born in 1722 in Herat or Multan. Following the assassination of Persian Emperor Nader Shah in 1747, a historic loya jirga (grand tribal council) in Kandahar unanimously elected the twenty-five-year-old cavalry commander as supreme sovereign of the Afghans.
A military strategist of the first order, Ahmad Shah established the Durrani Empire, creating the borders of modern Afghanistan. He launched eight campaigns into India, culminating in his historic victory at the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761. Beyond his martial prowess, he was an accomplished poet who composed exquisite ghazals in the Pashto language celebrating his deep spiritual love for the Afghan homeland.
